SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on generating vertical vibrations for vibrating containers filled with sand. The recommended solutions include using pneumatic systems to pressurize inner tubes and employing a counter-rotating eccentric mass exciter. The latter is highlighted as an easy-to-build and effective method for achieving variable amplitude and frequency vibrations, specifically around 10 Hz. The conversation emphasizes the importance of minimizing compression artifacts in the waveform when using pneumatic devices.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of pneumatic systems and their applications
  • Knowledge of vibration generation techniques
  • Familiarity with eccentric mass exciters and their operation
  • Basic principles of waveforms and frequency modulation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research pneumatic systems for vibration generation
  • Explore the design and construction of counter-rotating eccentric mass exciters
  • Study the effects of frequency and amplitude on vibration performance
  • Investigate methods to minimize waveform artifacts in pneumatic devices
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, hobbyists, and researchers interested in vibration technology, particularly those working with materials like sand and seeking effective methods for generating controlled vibrations.

Homework Statement

anyone have any suggestions for devices which generate vertical vibrations, preferably of variable amplitude (say, up to a cm or so) and of variable frequency (around 10hz) which can be used to vibrate a container full of, say, sand?

This could be tough depending on how much sand you are quaking. May I suggest using pneumatics to pressurize something like innertubes? The problem is that the waveform would be full of compression/ pressurization artifacts, the advantage is that its pretty cheap.

My sugestion: a counter rotating eccentric mass exciter. It is very easy to build and operate, and it will do the job as you want.
