AI Thread Summary
The Bay of Fundy experiences the highest tides globally, influenced by the Moon's gravity and Earth's rotation, resulting in significant tidal oscillation. The discussion centers on whether the tide's amplification at the bay's head is due to standing wave resonance, given its dimensions and depth. Participants debate the classification of the bay as either open-closed or closed-closed, with some suggesting it is open-closed due to its connection to the ocean and barriers. The speed of long-wavelength water waves is calculated using the formula √(gd), where d is the depth. Understanding these factors is crucial for analyzing tidal behavior in the Bay of Fundy.

Hard Wave Question (Really need help pleasez!)

The Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia, has the highest tides in the world. Assume that in midocean and at the mouth of the bay, the Moon’s gravity gradient and the Earth’s rotation make the water surface oscillate with an amplitude of a few entimeters and a period of 12 hours and 24 minutes. At the head of the bay, the amplitude is several metres. Argue for or against the proposition that the tide is magnified by standing wave resonance. Assume that the bay has a length of 210 km and a uniform depth of 36.1 m. The speed of long-wavelength water waves is given by \sqrt{gd}, where d is the water’s depth.

Huh...?What do I do?

Thanks!

can anyone help me with this question?

is the bay consider to be an open- closed or closed-closed?

I think open-closed (open being the ocean, closed being a rock shore barrier type of thing)

TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
