AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on motivations for pursuing a medical career, exploring whether financial incentives, personal fulfillment, or the enjoyment of the profession drive individuals to become doctors. Participants inquire about educational backgrounds, specifically if a degree in physics is common, and express curiosity about the high tuition fees associated with medical school and potential ways to mitigate them. The importance of patient interactions is emphasized, with one contributor sharing their experience as a part-time EMT and highlighting how these contacts shape one's feelings about the medical field. Overall, the conversation reflects on the blend of personal and financial considerations in the journey to becoming a physician.

Yeah? Why? Was it because you thought you'd get the money you want with it? Or was it because it felt "right"? Or just because being a doctor could be fun?

What was your undergrad degree in? Physics, by any chance? What are the tuition fees like? Is there any way around them? (I'm guessing it's lots of $$)

What kind of patient contacts have you had so far? How did you feel about them?

I have a good friend EE who went back to medical school, and I now work as a part-time EMT in addition to full-time EE. Patient contacts and your feelings about them are the key...

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
