High school Astrophysics Research Project Suggestions Please

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around selecting a suitable topic for a high school research project in Astrophysics. Participants explore various potential topics while considering the limitations of resources and the level of complexity appropriate for a high school student.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Homework-related
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest focusing on celestial objects such as asteroids, moons, planets, stars, nebulae, gas clouds, galaxies, and interstellar matter.
  • Others propose narrowing down to specific subtopics like stellar evolution, astroseismology, or dark matter detection methods.
  • There is a question about the intended scope and depth of the assignment, with one participant noting that high school research may not align with professional standards.
  • Some participants inquire about the student's access to resources, such as telescopes or planetarium facilities, which could influence the project direction.
  • One participant mentions that supernova surveying is a current topic of interest.
  • Another participant raises a distinction between "Astrophysics" and "Astronomy," questioning whether the project is accurately categorized.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various opinions on suitable topics and the nature of the project, indicating that there is no consensus on a specific direction or topic. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the exact focus of the research project.

Contextual Notes

Some participants highlight the limitations of high school-level physics and calculus knowledge, which may restrict the complexity of the project. There are also concerns about the clarity of the project’s classification as either Astrophysics or Astronomy.

Hi, so I'm currently a senior high school student and I'm doing a research project on Astrophysics. I just need help on picking a topic as I know there is a lot out there. I need a project idea that is current but not too challenging as I am limited with resources. Thanks.

What topic(s) is/are of interest? One could focus on objects like asteroids, moons, planets, stars, nebulae, gas clouds, galaxies, interstellar matter, and each of those would be various topics, or the structure of the universe.

I was thinking stars, nebulae, black holes, dark matter, galaxies.

The pick on of those, then narrow down to one of the subtopics, e.g., stellar evolution, or astroseismology, . . .

Or dark matter detection methods, . . . .

What can I look into as a high school student then?

How much physics and calculus has one had?

What exactly is the intended scope/depth of the assignment? That's a pretty vague description. As a high school student, you won't be able to do what the word "research" means for professional physicists.

High school/basic levels of physics and calculus

Does your high school have a telescope that you can access? If so, what kind and what capabilities?

Does your community have a planetarium? Your project could explain how planetariums help teach astrophysics and celestial navigation, perhaps culminating in a planned visit.

If you are interested in computer science and astrophysics, you could demonstrate planetarium software to the class.

Well I am not any expert but recently supernova surveying is really hot.

Are you sure it is an "Astrophysics" project and not an "Astronomy" project?

Your description appears to sound that it is an astronomy project, and there's nothing more annoying to astronomers (well, ok, there are a few others) than someone thinking that astronomy and astrophysics are interchangeable.

And did you pick this type of project, or was it assigned to you?

She hasn't been here in two months. At best, she's two months behind needing a topic.

Oh shoot. I should have looked at the date.
