AI Thread Summary
For junior undergraduate students in electrical engineering, the choice between industry internships and university research positions is crucial. Industry exposure is often valued by recruiters, as it demonstrates practical experience and a stable track record, which can enhance job prospects post-graduation. Internships in local companies can provide valuable hands-on experience and networking opportunities, potentially leading to job offers before graduation. Conversely, university research internships can also be beneficial, especially for those considering advanced studies or research-oriented careers. Ultimately, the decision should align with individual career goals and interests.

I can't speak to your particular circumstances, but my youngest nephew followed my path to chemical engineering. He managed to land internships at a local paper mill three summers in a row and had a good job waiting for him (also in industry) before he even graduated. If you want a good job in an industry, it is nice to be able to show the recruiters a stable track-record in industry.

I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
