AI Thread Summary
To build a wind turbine for a university project, one should focus on understanding the principles of electromagnetism and the mechanics of how turbines generate electricity. Resources for sourcing materials like steel can be found online, but practical knowledge in electrical engineering is crucial for successful construction. Discussions about electric rockets highlight the complexities of propulsion systems, with ion propulsion being a notable example, though creating rocket fuel is discouraged due to safety concerns. Engaging in formal education or self-study in electrical engineering is recommended to grasp the necessary concepts. Overall, a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical application is essential for these projects.

1. http://www.beststeel.co.nz/

2. Electric rocket? There is ion propulsion that is used in outer space where there is only microgravity and no air resistance, but how can you eject enough material electrically to make an earth-based rocket?

3. Wind turbine or windmill + generator

The Attempt at a Solution

Hmm, I will ask my questions, to let others do the legwork for me.

Uff, I am tired. To recuperate I am going to watch TV picking my nose.

LOL. Well, hopefully Physics Man will come back and show us some work on his questions. If not...

I believe I asked you already -- what do you mean by electric rockets? Other than ion propulsion, the term "elecric rocket" is almost an oxymoron:

We're not going to be of any help for teaching you how to make rocket fuel, sorry. Against the PF rules. Google or Wikipedia will be good sources for you instead.

You're best bet if you want to build one of those is to study electrical engineering and then to do a specialist subject in turbines. Theres a lot to learn. I suggest you read up on basic electromagnetism and study the relationships in there and link that to some sort of physical demonstration to understand how it works.

In case you want to know the basic idea is that you are doing the inverse of what a motor does. Instead of supplying a motor with electricity in which it will create a force that moves it around in a circular loop, you are doing the opposite whereby you push the motor in a loop and you create electricity due to the relationship in the rate of change of flux through the wire.

Again if you are going to do this I would suggest you either enrol in an electrical engineering course or if you are keen just read the books and do some practical and theory exercises
from the book. Universities are a good way to learn since they are collaborative and standardized which can be a double edged sword however for the most part they offer good training.

I wish you all the best.
