How can we improve the performance of our mousetrap racecar?

In summary, the conversation discusses a project where a mousetrap car needs to be built and travel a distance of 3m. The car is currently not functioning properly and the group is unsure of the problem. They mention that the axle is 5mm wide and made of cardboard, and the mousetrap is positioned far back on the car with the string attached to one end of the axle. The car is only able to travel about 1.75m. The group has not been able to use any equations yet due to the car not working. They suspect friction may be an issue, as well as a problem with the dowel attached to the mousetrap. When the mousetrap snaps shut, the dowel stops

Homework Statement

For school, we have to build a mousetrap car, and get it to go 3m. Our car doesn't roll very well, and we aren't quite sure of the problem. We have an axle that is 5mm wide, and the thing that holds it to the chassis is made of cardboard. Also, the mousetrap is pretty far back on the car, and the string is attached to one end of the axle.
So, it isn't able to get to 3m, only about 1.75.

Homework Equations

We haven't been able to use any yet, because the car doesn't work

The Attempt at a Solution

We thought it might have been friction, because the hole for the axle isn't very smooth, but there was also a problem with the dowel. While the mousetrap snaps shut, the string is being pulled by the dowel attached to the mousetrap. But, when the dowel is at the highest point when it is closing, it stops pulling the string, and it becomes loose. Or, it doesn't pull at all.

1. What is a mousetrap racecar?

A mousetrap racecar is a small vehicle that is powered by a mousetrap spring. The goal is to build a car that can travel the furthest distance using only the energy from the mousetrap.

2. How does a mousetrap racecar work?

The mousetrap racecar works by converting the potential energy stored in the mousetrap spring into kinetic energy to propel the car forward. As the spring unwinds, it pulls a string attached to an axle, causing the wheels to turn and move the car forward.

3. What materials are needed to build a mousetrap racecar?

The materials needed to build a mousetrap racecar include a mousetrap, wooden or plastic wheels, axles, a string, and a lightweight body. Other materials such as rubber bands, paperclips, and straws can also be used for additional support or decoration.

4. What are some tips for building a successful mousetrap racecar?

Some tips for building a successful mousetrap racecar include using lightweight materials to reduce the overall weight of the car, placing the wheels as far apart as possible for stability, and making sure the string is wound tightly around the axle to maximize the distance the car can travel.

5. Are there any safety precautions to keep in mind when building a mousetrap racecar?

Yes, it is important to handle the mousetrap with caution and have adult supervision if children are participating in building the racecar. Also, make sure to test the car in a safe and open area to prevent any potential injuries.
