How Do Gas Masks Work?

This has been bugging me for a long time and I would often check to see if it was on howstuffworks.com but I never seemed to have any luck.
So how do they actually work??

Why do two separately floating objects in a liquid "attract" each other ?? What if gravity is an emergent property like surface tension ?
