AI Thread Summary
Accretion plays a crucial role in galaxy formation, particularly in relation to the Initial Mass Function (IMF). The discussion revolves around understanding a specific homework problem related to this topic, which the poster finds confusing despite having the solution. The provided solution references equations from a textbook that are essential for grasping the concept. Participants are encouraged to share their approaches to the problem to clarify the solution's steps. Overall, the thread highlights the need for a deeper explanation of the equations involved in the context of galaxy formation and accretion.

Homework Statement

I had a homework problem which was already due. I got the solutions for the homework and still don't understand where the solution is coming from. The question and solution are located here: http://ircamera.as.arizona.edu/Astr_540/PS3_soln.pdf The problem is #3.

Homework Equations

The equations are shown in the solution.

The Attempt at a Solution

My attempt really wasn't much. I really didn't have much time to work on it. Now that I've looked over the solution, it looks completely foreign to me haha maybe some of you guys can explain what's happening in the solution.

The explanation will be better if we know how you would approach the problem - now that you have the time to think about it some more.
From what you've supplied, the model solution involves applying equations from a textbook.

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
