How is the Galactic Magnetic Field Measured and Modeled?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on the measurement and modeling of the Galactic magnetic field, highlighting various methods such as the Faraday effect, Zeeman effect, and synchrotron radiation. Participants suggest reviewing Binney and Tremain's work for foundational insights and recommend specific academic papers and resources for further exploration. The need for concise references and models is emphasized due to time constraints for writing a monograph. Overall, the conversation aims to guide the inquiry into the complex topic of the Galactic magnetic field. Comprehensive resources and methodologies are essential for a thorough understanding of this astrophysical phenomenon.

Hi,

I need to write a monograph with about 30 pages about the topic: "Our Galaxy magnetic field.". I just need some indications about some good references about this, like the methods to determine de Galactic manetic field, some simple models.

I tried to find, but there are a lot of information, and as I have a short time to prepare it, I don't know where to start.

Perhaps someone knows some review about determining the Galactic magnetic field...

Well, thanks anyway.

There are several methods for determining the galactic magnetic field.

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_effect#Faraday_rotation_in_the_interstellar_medium" of pulsars as well)
2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeeman_effect" on emission and absorption lines.
3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchrotron_radiation#Synchrotron_radiation_in_astronomy" (I'm not sure if this method is used much in the galaxy)There may be others I'm missing. I'd suggest that the next step in your research would be to look up Binney and Tremain's https://www.amazon.com/dp/0691084459/?tag=pfamazon01-20.

Here's one paper that I'm familiar with. There are maps of a proposed model for the galaxy's B field.

TL;DR Summary: In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. In case of failure to detect alien signals, it will further expand the radius of the so-called silence (or rather, radio silence) of the Universe. Is there any sense in this or is blissful ignorance better? In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. Your posts, clips and photos may by all means include scientific information; that does not make it less beautiful to me (n.b. the posts must of course comply with the PF guidelines, i.e. regarding science, only mainstream science is allowed, fringe/pseudoscience is not allowed). n.b.
