Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the identification and classification of various units of measurement from the Imperial, metric, and U.S. customary systems. Participants seek resources that provide specifications, symbols, and abbreviations for these units, while also addressing the categorization of specific units like the nautical mile.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant, Ivan, expresses difficulty finding a comprehensive resource that specifies units and their corresponding systems, citing Wikipedia as inadequate.
  • Another participant suggests a website found through Google, though its relevance is uncertain.
  • A different participant mentions the utility of Google calculator for conversions, but does not address the classification issue directly.
  • Ivan reiterates the need for a resource similar to a Wikipedia template that clearly categorizes units by system, specifically questioning the classification of the nautical mile.
  • CS points out that the nautical mile is not classified under the metric, Imperial, or U.S. systems, noting its historical context and current use in maritime and aviation fields.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for a clear classification of units, but there is disagreement regarding the categorization of the nautical mile and the adequacy of available resources.

Contextual Notes

There is an acknowledgment that some units may be historically significant but not officially recognized in current measurement systems, which complicates their classification.

Guys thanks for replies,

but I need something like this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Convert/list_of_units

Problem with this link is that I don't know from which system is nautical mile (they put it in "other" section) and so on ...

Ivan

Some units are meaningful only in a historic sense and are not accepted as part of current systems.
