AI Thread Summary
The Big Bang was an instantaneous event that marked the beginning of the universe, lasting only a fraction of a second. Current understanding indicates that the Big Bang is not still happening, despite galaxies continuing to move away from each other due to the expansion of space. Researchers have traced the universe's history back to approximately 10^-37 seconds after the singularity, during which matter began to form as the universe cooled. The space between galaxies is not completely empty, as it contains dark energy and other cosmic phenomena. For more information on the movement of galaxies, Hubble's law provides a foundational explanation.

How long did the big bang last? Is it still going on?
If it is still going on (as galaxies are still moving away), is mass still being produced? If mass is no more being produced, is the space between current galaxies positions and original big-bang-singularity position completely empty?

Of what I understand, the Big Bang was an instantaneous. The big bang represent the Singularity, where a Model must be use.

Then, researchers has been able to go back up to 10^-37 seconds after the singularity happened. Then, still based on the Model, out of the big bang, the universe cooled down and created matters.

So, no the Big Bang isn't going on at the moment.

If you want to read about why the galaxies are moving away away, search for Hubble's law (or simply go on Wiki for a rough idea http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble_constant)

3I/ATLAS, also known as C/2025 N1 (ATLAS) and formerly designated as A11pl3Z, is an iinterstellar comet. It was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) station at Río Hurtado, Chile on 1 July 2025. Note: it was mentioned (as A11pl3Z) by DaveE in a new member's introductory thread. https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/brian-cox-lead-me-here.1081670/post-7274146 https://earthsky.org/space/new-interstellar-object-candidate-heading-toward-the-sun-a11pl3z/ One...
Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
