AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the documentary "The Swedish Theory of Love," highlighting a graph that places Croatia in the middle of a spectrum regarding societal values and relationships. This positioning is presented as evidence of Croatia being an ideal place to live. The conversation touches on the risks associated with love affairs in various countries and references the World Values Survey, which tracks changes in societal values over time. There are mentions of personal preferences for countries in the top right quadrant of the graph and a nod to cultural references like Rafferty's song. Additionally, the discussion briefly explores themes of ethics, morality, and the historical context of honor-related violence, suggesting that a classical education can provide insights into these issues.

Yesterday I have seen the excellent documentary "The Swedish theory of love". (Yes, you can find the full documentary on YouTube, and no, it's not about sex!) Perhaps the most interesting part in the documentary is this graph.

And guess which country is right in the middle? Croatia! If that is not the proof that Croatia is the best country to live in in the world, then I don't know what is.

Far too risky for love affairs!

While looking up the definitions, I ran across the World Values Survey which seems to be where this came from. It also has a nice video showing how it changes over time.

I would personally prefer countries in the top right.

Reminds me of Rafferty's old song "Clowns to the Left of us, Jokers to the Right! Still I'm stuck in the middle with you.."

Unless one is Catholic as confession resolves controversy.
So-called "christian Marxism" relinquishes religion from Honour while (hopefully) retaining ethics and morality.

[One benefit of a classical education are the many old-time polemics against Honour-violence and the waste of dueling. One need only look at the lives of poor Galois, murdered in a contrived 'duel', and Schwarzschild pere, sickened and dying early as a WWI veteran.]

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
