AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around access issues to a chat feature on a forum, specifically the preloader link and the flashchat.php front-end. Users are experiencing 404 errors when trying to access the chat, with some successfully entering while others are left out. It is suggested that clearing browser cache may resolve the issue, as some users believe cached data is preventing access. There are mentions of a potential manual activation of the chat by a moderator named Greg, leading to speculation about whether users are being restricted for accessing the chat on off days. The conversation touches on technical troubleshooting, including restarting computers and clearing temporary files, with some users humorously debating the effectiveness of these solutions. Overall, the chat's sporadic availability and the challenges in accessing it are the central themes of the discussion.

Its not there, omg

Not me so far. There's something I always ponder, is it really at 11am in the east coast when the chat should be on? or someone has to manually turn the chat on at that time?

Try the "preloader" link in my first post.

Not found today, although it worked for some previous week when the flashchat.php front-end wasn't active.

(Perhaps you managed to pick up a cached copy).

Hmm. I just logged out and logged back in. Astro is there.

I was able to get in with the loader in the OP.

Wha? So you guys are in? I just clicked the preloader link you mention, but still '404 error, page cannot be found'-thingy.

Perhaps your browser has cached it too. I'm getting 404 Not Found in multiple browsers.

I'd bet that if you or turbo emptied your browser cache, you wouldn't be able to get back in.

Astro had to go back to the office, so it's kind of lonely in there...

Greg hasn't opened the front door (flashchat.php) and seems to have taken away the back door (preloader.swf) although some people seem to have a copy. I think we either have to wait for Greg to graciously see fit to let us in, or find the side door!

  • #13
There's a hidden door behind Grandfather clock (29 ways).

  • #14
I was able to enter, there are two of us for the moment.

  • #15
Nope, page not found.

  • #16
Sigh, page not found for me either. Where are you guys getting your special access cards?

Still a very select club. Astro, Borek, and me. I have to be careful. Borek has a shiny new banning-gun.

  • #18
Well it's going to be select if no bugger else can get there.

Maybe Greg is punishing people for going into chat on days it wasn't *open* and announcing it?

Of course there were some innocenst that wandered in when the chat notice was left up.

If anyone used the other link https://www.physicsforums.com/misc.php?do=flashchat , then apparently it screws up the preloader.

So if people clear browser cache and use the preloader link in the OP, they might be able to get into chat?Edit: Preloader link. https://www.physicsforums.com/chat/preloader.swf

I wonder why it worked before.

Apparently is chat was turned off, and if anyone used the flashchat action or cleared the cache, it also deactivated the preloader.

Wake up, Greg! Save the suffering chatters.

  • #27
My browser cache was cleared yesterday during a scheduled maintenance process. It looks like I'm out of luck. :frown:

Rats! I initially clicked on the flashchat link, but when that didn't work, I used the preloader link that I had bookmarked a few weeks ago. Got right in, and I logged out and back in when it became apparent that other members could get in.

Clear your cache and try again. Failing that go IT Crowd style:

"Have you tried turning it [your computer] off and on again?"

my 'cache'? -_-

and why would i turn my comp off, it stays on for like a week at a time

Classic fix for most problems is to restart the computer.

Your cache, all the crap downloaded to your computer whilst browsing. Sometimes computers hold old items and use them instead of the new stuff from the server. It supposed to speed up loading times.

My cache clears on restart. Perhaps your problem is that it stays on for so long.

Windows is an OS that requires occasional restarts to keep it running smoothly other wise it can drastically reduce performance.

I'll assume you know what you're talking about, and restart my computer.

Didn't work.

Was I banned or something? ;/

  • #48
That might be the case. Do you remember being banned previously?

  • #49
Have you actually tried clearing the temp files as per previous posts? (I assumed you had)

  • #50
I haven't been banned previously, and idk how to clear temp files, unless you mean cookies in internet settings.
