In summary, Intel plans to release their first x86 server processor with 64-bit capabilities, codenamed Nocona, in the second quarter. However, this is a server chip and they currently do not have any publicly-announced plans for a desktop 64-bit processor. While their Prescott processor does have 64-bit extensions, they are not currently enabled and will only be turned on with the release of a new socket.

When will intel issue 64bit desktop/mobile processor like AMD did?

No. Prescott is a Pentium 4 manufactured on a 90 nanometer (0.9 micron) process with a 1 MB L2 cache instead of a 512 MB L2 cache.

Here are Intel's 64 bit plans.

"Intel's first x86 server processor with 64-bit capabilities is still on schedule to ship in the second quarter, Otellini said. Servers with the new chip, code-named Nocona, should ship in July, he said."

Note: that's a server chip! Plans for desktop... not on any charts so far.

Intel's Athlon 64 - where is it?

Thank you for the correction, Jikx. We might then say Nocona is Intel's equivalent of the AMD's budget 32-bit/64-bit server chip Opteron, and that Intel does not yet have a publicly-announced Athlon-64-like gamer (desktop) chip in the pipeline.

TECHNICALLY it is

Prescott has 64 bit extensions, HOWEVER theyre not enabled, and won't be enabled for the current socket. When they move to the new one (757 I believe?) there are plans to turn it on.

1. What is the Intel Prescott 64bit processor?

The Intel Prescott 64bit processor is a central processing unit (CPU) developed by Intel Corporation. It is a 64-bit processor, meaning it can handle larger amounts of data and perform more complex operations compared to 32-bit processors.

2. Is the Intel Prescott 64bit processor compatible with 32-bit systems?

Yes, the Intel Prescott 64bit processor is compatible with both 64-bit and 32-bit systems. However, to fully utilize its capabilities, a 64-bit operating system is required.

3. How does the Intel Prescott 64bit processor differ from previous Intel processors?

The Intel Prescott 64bit processor is the successor to the Intel Northwood processor. It has a larger cache, improved microarchitecture, and supports 64-bit instructions, making it more efficient and powerful.

4. What are the advantages of using the Intel Prescott 64bit processor?

The Intel Prescott 64bit processor has several advantages, including faster processing speed, support for larger amounts of RAM, and the ability to handle more complex tasks. It also has improved security features and better compatibility with modern software.

5. Is the Intel Prescott 64bit processor still relevant in today's technology?

Yes, the Intel Prescott 64bit processor is still relevant in today's technology. While it may not be the latest processor, it is still a powerful and efficient option for many computing needs, especially for those on a budget. It is also widely used in servers and workstations.
