I remembered seeing something about that on NOVA:

The 'science' behind the c^2 isn't exactly a 'eureka' moment the way it's explained in the two paragraphs (at the bottom of that page). In fact, it seems rather un-scientific. I like their terminology, " did suddenly appear " for the explanation---
