AI Thread Summary
Sodium nitrate, often confused with sodium nitrite, is a topic of concern in food safety discussions due to its potential link to cancer. The conversation highlights the fear surrounding its presence in food products, with some expressing anxiety over consumption levels. Clarification is provided that nitrites themselves are not carcinogenic; rather, it is the nitrosamines formed from nitrites that raise health concerns. The discussion encourages sharing credible sources to better understand the implications of sodium nitrate and nitrite in food.

Hi All!

Am new to the forums, have been reading for a good while but thought I'd actually register and post something!

I've been reading a lot about food safety lately and just cannot seem to get my head around how this chemical Sodium Nitrate is actually allowed in food products at all!

From all I've read online it seems pretty obvious that this chemical produces cancer.

It has me a bit freaked out to be honest that I've eaten so much food that contains this. I'm probably being paranoid though. I mean the doses they put in the food must be fairly small no?

Hoping for a good discussion!

Hi Meejo and welcome to the forums!

I haven't read anything on Sodium Nitrate myself, so how about some references to where you got the information on it from? how do you know it causes cancer? What foods contain it?

You more likely meant sodium nitrite.

The study provides critical new insights into the African Humid Period, a time between 14,500 and 5,000 years ago when the Sahara desert was a green savanna, rich in water bodies that facilitated human habitation and the spread of pastoralism. Later aridification turned this region into the world's largest desert. Due to the extreme aridity of the region today, DNA preservation is poor, making this pioneering ancient DNA study all the more significant. Genomic analyses reveal that the...
