AI Thread Summary
The function H(x)=4 is analyzed as a linear function with a y-intercept of 4, a slope of 0, and an average rate of change of 0. This confirms that the function is indeed linear, as it represents a horizontal line. While "linear" typically implies a straight line, it does not necessitate that the intercept must be zero. The discussion clarifies that the characteristics of H(x)=4 align with the definition of linear functions. Overall, the analysis of H(x)=4 as a linear function is correct.

[SOLVED] Simple Linear Function

1.Determine the slope, average rate of change, and y intercept of H(x)=4
3.I believe the Y intercept is 4, the slope is 0 and the avg. rate of change is 0. Is this correct?

Also, does "linear" mean it must be a straight line?

"the Y intercept is 4, the slope is 0 and the avg. rate of change is 0" is correct.

Loosely, linear means straight line, but technically it may also mean the intercept is zero. (In the loose interpretation the intercept does not have to be zero.)

Thank you.

I picked up this problem from the Schaum's series book titled "College Mathematics" by Ayres/Schmidt. It is a solved problem in the book. But what surprised me was that the solution to this problem was given in one line without any explanation. I could, therefore, not understand how the given one-line solution was reached. The one-line solution in the book says: The equation is ##x \cos{\omega} +y \sin{\omega} - 5 = 0##, ##\omega## being the parameter. From my side, the only thing I could...
