Is the Crookes Tube a Good Choice for a 12th Grade Physics Project?

I am 12th grader and need a physics project idea. It should be either research based or investigatory project.

What about Crookes tube?
It played an important role in the events that resulted the creation of QM.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science.
