AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the hypothesis that advanced civilizations may create universe-scale simulations, suggesting that our reality could be one of many simulations. This theory posits that if such simulations are feasible, it is likely that they have already been executed, given the vastness of the universe. Participants express mixed feelings about technology, with one noting that while computers can lead to chaos and frustration, they also facilitate engaging experiences, such as the performance of AI like Watson in competitions. A key point raised is the idea that if our universe is indeed a simulation, the limitations of our perceived reality—such as experiencing only four dimensions—might be due to the constraints of the simulation technology used by the creators. However, some participants caution against overly speculative interpretations of the research, indicating that the original intent of the inquiry may differ from these interpretations.

Physicists To Test If Universe Is A Computer Simulation

The theory basically goes that any civilisation which could evolve to a 'post-human' stage would almost certainly learn to run simulations on the scale of a universe. And that given the size of reality - billions of worlds, around billions of suns - it is fairly likely that if this is possible, it has already happened.

It's easy to get so 'into' computers one loses touch and thinks they're real.

My opinion - Computers make nothing but chaos and frustration .

"Watson" however was entertaining.

Computers also allow forums to be run.

It freakin' owned the other two jeopardy contestants. :-p

Resolution?

I might be completely off base here, but I'm wondering... is this essentially saying that if our universe is a computer simulation, the reason we experience reality in four dimensions and only to the resolution of the quantum scale is limited "simulation" technology in some other universe?

that's not what the researchers were looking for but I guess you could interpret it in that manner

Sorry, but this is too overly speculative.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
