AI Thread Summary
Transferring to the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) for a Computer Science degree is appealing due to the local job market, particularly with casinos actively hiring CS majors. UNLV's program is ABET accredited, which is a positive factor, although some industry professionals argue that ABET accreditation is less critical for Computer Science compared to other fields. The consensus suggests that the curriculum across different institutions may cover similar material, indicating that the reputation of the university may not significantly impact job prospects in the tech industry. Overall, the decision to transfer should consider both the local employment opportunities and the perceived value of the degree from UNLV versus the current program at the University of Arizona.

I'm looking to transfer to University of Nevada Las Vegas. I've read that the local casinos snatch up CS majors like heroin brownies. Can anybody offer any other input to keep in mind?

I've checked and they're ABET accredited. I'm currently attending University of Arizona which was ranked in US and News Report as in the top 50 CS programs. Also, I've been told by a programmer I know (works for Amazon.com) that ABET accreditation isn't important for Computer Science.

Doesn't matter where you get your bachelors. It's going to be the same material in either place.

I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
