AI Thread Summary
To determine the maximum load for a C-shaped hook before bending, the combined stress formula (N/A ± M/Z) can be utilized, incorporating both direct and bending stress. While curved beam theory offers a foundational understanding, the varying cross-section of the hook complicates accurate calculations. A finite element analysis is recommended for a more precise estimate, though it may be more complex. The simpler approach may yield sufficiently accurate results for practical purposes. Understanding these methods is crucial for assessing the hook's performance under load.

I have a c shaped hook that I am trying to find the maximum load before it starts to bend. Is there an equation for this. I have the yield strength and dimensions.

thank you sir.

A simple approach is to use the combined stress formula N/A +- M/Z
That is, direct stress + bending stress. I know that this may not be as accurate as finite elements or curved beam theory, but it is more accessible and may give indicative results sufficiently accurate for the purpose.
