Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding a simple engineering software for modeling various mechanical mechanisms, including crank and rocker, gear systems, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Participants express a need for software that is manageable on older hardware and can simplify the modeling process compared to traditional paper methods.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks software that can model mechanisms like crank and rocker, gear systems, and hydraulics, emphasizing the need for simplicity and compatibility with older hardware.
  • Another participant suggests a specific website and mentions a book that includes a free student edition of software capable of meeting these needs.
  • A participant questions the meaning of 'model' in this context, prompting clarification about simulating mechanical movements and calculating gear ratios.
  • Further clarification is provided regarding the specific software, Working Model 2D, which is recommended for its capabilities.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for software to model mechanical systems, but there are varying interpretations of what 'model' entails and which specific software is most suitable.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the capabilities of the software and the specific requirements for modeling mechanisms remain unresolved. The discussion does not clarify the limitations of the suggested software or the specific features that may be necessary for the user's needs.

Who May Find This Useful

Engineers and students interested in mechanical design and simulation, particularly those looking for accessible software solutions for modeling mechanisms.

I am looking for a simple engineering software to model crank and rocker, gear, crank and slider, worm gear, scotch yoke, cam and other generic mechanisms.

Most important is crank and rocker.

Maybe some hydraulics and pneumatics.

Something my celeron D 512mb can handle.
Takes too much time to model this on paper. Aint do this in years.

Free or not free, I don't mind at this point.

Thanks.

Go to this website.

Down the left hand column you will see the software.

I used this book in school about 5 years ago. The software is capable of doing most of what you are looking for and my book came with a free student edition.

Thanks
Matt

What do you mean by 'model'?

i'll get the book too, because it sounds interesting
thanks

simulate , means figure out that if crank turns 50deg, what would the rocker turn at the given linkage length and rocker and crank diameters.
A set of 4 gears with uneven number of teeth.
what is the gear ration?
not doing this by hand anymore.

What was the name of the proggy that came with the book, CFDFEAGURU?

i bought the book, but there is no proggy mentioned to come with it

thanks
