    Impulse Momentum
AI Thread Summary
A car with a mass of 1470 kg is traveling north at 3.35 m/s and makes a right turn to the east over 3.65 seconds while maintaining speed. The impulse exerted on the car can be calculated using the change in momentum in both the x and y directions. The initial momentum in the y-direction is 4924.5 N*s, and the final momentum needs to be determined for both directions to find the impulse. The average net force during the turn can be calculated from the impulse and the time duration of the turn. Understanding the components of momentum in each direction is crucial for solving the problem.

Homework Statement

A car with mass = 1470 kilograms is traveling north at a constant speed of 3.35 m/s. Take north to be the positive y direction.

The car takes 3.65 seconds to complete a righthand turn to the east (positive x direction), while maintaining a constant speed the whole time.

a)What is the x component of the impulse exerted on the car during the turn?

b)What is the y component of the impulse exerted on the car during the turn?

c) What is the magnitude of the average net force exerted on the car during the turn?

d) What is the direction of the average net force exerted on the car during the turn? (Enter smallest angle from the positive x direction.)

Homework Equations

P = mv

The Attempt at a Solution

a) I = Pf - Pi with Pi = mv = 1470 * 3.35 = 4924.5 N*s

how can I find Pf? Am i setting up the equation right?

You'll have two equations -- one for the x-direction and one for the y-direction.

What was the initial momentum in the x-direction? What about the final momentum in that direction?

Same thing for the y-direction.

These results give you the impulse in each of those directions.

Got it all ;)

I multiplied the values first without the error limit. Got 19.38. rounded it off to 2 significant figures since the given data has 2 significant figures. So = 19. For error I used the above formula. It comes out about 1.48. Now my question is. Should I write the answer as 19±1.5 (rounding 1.48 to 2 significant figures) OR should I write it as 19±1. So in short, should the error have same number of significant figures as the mean value or should it have the same number of decimal places as...
Thread 'A cylinder connected to a hanging mass'
Let's declare that for the cylinder, mass = M = 10 kg Radius = R = 4 m For the wall and the floor, Friction coeff = ##\mu## = 0.5 For the hanging mass, mass = m = 11 kg First, we divide the force according to their respective plane (x and y thing, correct me if I'm wrong) and according to which, cylinder or the hanging mass, they're working on. Force on the hanging mass $$mg - T = ma$$ Force(Cylinder) on y $$N_f + f_w - Mg = 0$$ Force(Cylinder) on x $$T + f_f - N_w = Ma$$ There's also...
