Obtain Oxygen: Break Apart CO2 or H2SO4?

AI Thread Summary
Oxygen can be obtained through various chemical processes, including the electrolysis of water, which requires the addition of sulfuric acid to enhance conductivity. This method produces hydrogen and oxygen in a 2:1 ratio. Another method discussed involves mixing bleach and hydrogen peroxide, although this poses significant safety risks due to the potential release of harmful vapors. Additionally, a magnesium flame can burn in carbon dioxide, breaking it apart and liberating carbon, but this process does not yield oxygen as a final product. The conversation emphasizes the importance of safety when conducting experiments to obtain oxygen and highlights the limitations of certain methods.

Is it possible, and if so how, to obtain oxygen by breaking apart Carbon Dioxide or Sulphuric Acid?

Ask any plant.

or Sulphuric Acid?
You can obtain oxygen and hydrogen by electrolysis of water,in the ratio 1:2,respectively.
. You will need to add some Sulphuric acid to increase conductivity.

A good way to get oxygen is mixing bleach and hydrogen peroxide. Fun little home experiment.

But, don't be stupid enough to breathe this, if any peroxide vapor is in the mix, it would be very dangerous for you.

A magnesium flame is able to continue burning in CO2 because the reaction is sufficiently energetic to be able to break apart CO2 and consume the oxygen while liberating carbon.

What's the use of this if we don't get Oxygen as a product here?
