AI Thread Summary
Users of Opera and other browsers have reported experiencing text popups that display the first sentence or two of forum posts when hovering over certain areas. These popups are linked to the title of the table cell containing the post link. To trigger the popup, users should hover over the margins of the cell rather than the text itself. Additionally, experiences vary across different browser versions; for instance, in newer versions of Safari, hovering over the thread title successfully produces the popups, while older versions do not, despite pop-up blockers being disabled. Users have confirmed similar functionality in Firefox and Netscape.

I use Opera.

Sometimes, when looking at the "New posts" page, I get a little text popup (in the same style as the ALT text for images) that contains the first sentence or two of the posts. But, I can't figure out what I'm supposed to roll over to get the text. From where does it come?

I use Opera as well, and I too would like to know why. It almost seems like it randomly happens to me.

Aha, I found it.

Apparently, it's the title of the table cell containing the link. It appears what you need to do is to point outside of the text area -- in other words, point into the margins of the cell. Any margin works; left, right, top, or bottom.

Ahh! Good find!

Hmm...in the more recent version of Safari on my laptop, I get those pop ups by hovering over the thread title, but on the older version on my office desktop, I don't get any pop ups (and no, I don't have pop up blocker on).

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
