Optical band gap of a cobalt ferrite

AI Thread Summary
To determine the optical band gap of a cobalt ferrite film on a glass substrate without knowing the film's thickness, one can use absorption, transmittance, and diffuse reflectance spectra. A Tauc plot is typically employed, but without thickness, the absorption coefficient (α) cannot be calculated directly. Instead, it is suggested to plot αd, where 'd' represents the film thickness, allowing for a scaled representation. The band gap can then be derived from this modified plot. This approach provides a viable solution for analyzing the optical properties of the film despite the lack of thickness information.

Hi everyone
How can I determine the optical band gap of a cobalt ferrite film deposited on a glass substrate using its absorption, transmittance and diffuse reflectance spectrum (knowing that I don't know the thickness of this film)

thanks Vagn for replying me
but i don't have the thickness of the film (so i can not determine the absorption coefficient alpha that i need for the tauc plot)

You can plot αd instead of α.

and how can i determine the band gap from that plot

Replace the α's for the Tauc plot with αd's. As d is constant, it just changes the scale.

i will do it
thank you i really appreciate your help
