AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the nature of optical illusions and the cognitive processes involved in perceiving them. Participants share links to various optical illusions and discuss their experiences with these visual phenomena. A key point raised is the ability to switch perspectives and see different figures within the same image, suggesting that this may relate to memory recall rather than a straightforward visual perception. The conversation also references 3-D renderings inspired by Escher's work, emphasizing the complexity of visual interpretation and the brain's role in processing these illusions. Overall, the dialogue explores how optical illusions challenge our understanding of sight and perception.

Once both figures are seen, I can change perspective at will. Does anyone know what is happening when I do this? Is this simply a matter of recalling a different memory?

Every time I see some picture/movie/animation on the net that says "look for n seconds at something" I know what's coming to me

Here's a couple more.

Renderings I did based on Escher's work. (the trick here is that these are 3-D models, not 2-D).

I think so too. But I don't know why I couldn't count how many black spots are there in Optical Illusion 1.

I am reading Nicholas Wade's book A Troublesome Inheritance. Please let's not make this thread a critique about the merits or demerits of the book. This thread is my attempt to understanding the evidence that Natural Selection in the human genome was recent and regional. On Page 103 of A Troublesome Inheritance, Wade writes the following: "The regional nature of selection was first made evident in a genomewide scan undertaken by Jonathan Pritchard, a population geneticist at the...
