Optical Properties of Materials presentation

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on finding engaging topics for an oral presentation in an Optical Properties of Materials class. Suggestions include exploring how chameleons change color and discussing the workings of liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Participants emphasize the importance of selecting subjects that are visually appealing and not overly theoretical. Resources for research, such as websites and articles, are encouraged to aid in preparation. The conversation highlights the balance between interesting content and accessibility for the audience.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to gather some ideas of subjects for an oral presentation in my Optical Properties of Materials class: I'd love to find something pleasant or at least nice to develop (like I heard "how a cameleon changes color?"^^), not too theoretical if possible... And with some websites/paper to prepare it...
Do you have some ideas which could help me? Thanks you a lot

How about discussing how a liquid crystal display works?

Typing "how LCD works" into google bring up everything from pics to video to very theoretical articles.

If you want to go further try typing in

nematic crystals

go well

Thread 'A quartet of epi-illumination methods'
Well, it took almost 20 years (!!!), but I finally obtained a set of epi-phase microscope objectives (Zeiss). The principles of epi-phase contrast is nearly identical to transillumination phase contrast, but the phase ring is a 1/8 wave retarder rather than a 1/4 wave retarder (because with epi-illumination, the light passes through the ring twice). This method was popular only for a very short period of time before epi-DIC (differential interference contrast) became widely available. So...
I am currently undertaking a research internship where I am modelling the heating of silicon wafers with a 515 nm femtosecond laser. In order to increase the absorption of the laser into the oxide layer on top of the wafer it was suggested we use gold nanoparticles. I was tasked with modelling the optical properties of a 5nm gold nanoparticle, in particular the absorption cross section, using COMSOL Multiphysics. My model seems to be getting correct values for the absorption coefficient and...
