AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the acceleration of the universe's expansion, primarily supported by the Doppler effect observed in light from distant galaxies. Participants clarify that while the Doppler effect indicates redshifts, it does not imply that galaxies are decelerating relative to the Milky Way. The idea that the Milky Way's deceleration could explain the observed acceleration is dismissed. Users are encouraged to search the forum for existing discussions on this topic, indicating that it has been extensively covered. The consensus is that the acceleration of the universe is a well-supported phenomenon, not merely a result of local observations.

Hello,
According to my understanding, it is thought that the universe is not only expanding, but is also accelerating based on Doppler effect (light emitted by other galaxies have different wavelength.) Are there other evidences as well?
Could not the galaxies acceleration be our observation of the milky way decelerating in a faster rate than other galaxy? (That would still have the same doppler effect as if other galaxies are accelerating.)

Thank you,

This topic is beat absolutely to DEATH here on this forum (and the answer is no). I suggest a forum search.

Today at about 4:30 am I saw the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter, where they were about the width of the full moon, or one half degree apart. Did anyone else see it? Edit: The moon is 2,200 miles in diameter and at a distance of 240,000 miles. Thereby it subtends an angle in radians of 2,200/240,000=.01 (approximately). With pi radians being 180 degrees, one radian is 57.3 degrees, so that .01 radians is about .50 degrees (angle subtended by the moon). (.57 to be more exact, but with...
