Pendulum driven by combination of horizontal and vertical excitation

SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the equations of motion for a parametrically driven pendulum, where the suspension point undergoes vertical sinusoidal motion. This setup allows for sustained oscillation when the driving frequency matches the natural frequency of the pendulum. The team from Millersville University has successfully constructed small Foucault pendulums utilizing this parametric drive mechanism. For detailed equations, refer to their provided discussion link.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of oscillatory motion and natural frequency
  • Familiarity with sinusoidal functions and their applications
  • Basic knowledge of pendulum mechanics
  • Experience with mathematical modeling of dynamic systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the equations of motion for parametrically driven systems
  • Study the principles of Foucault pendulums and their applications
  • Explore the effects of driving frequency on oscillation stability
  • Learn about sinusoidal motion and its impact on mechanical systems
USEFUL FOR

Physicists, mechanical engineers, and students studying dynamics who are interested in advanced pendulum systems and their mathematical modeling.

The technical name of that setup is a parametrically driven pendulum. The suspension point moves up and slightly, in a sinusoidal pattern. When the driving frequency is an exact match for the natural frequency of the pendulum the drive will sustain the pendulum oscillation.

A team of millersville University has build several small Foucault pendulums with parametric drive. See their "[URL discussion[/URL] of equations of motion for a parametrically driven pendulum..
