I think a good way to raise revenue for hosting/server fees would be to sell PhysicsForums.com t-shirts. I'd buy one, and wear it loud and proud. Unless they cost like $35, then I wouldn't.

Physics news on Phys.org
They use to sell them, I still have mine, and a baseball style cap. For 2.2 million dollars I would give them up.

You can see the front in this picture. It's the shirt on the left (as you're looking at it); not the shirt on the right.
https://www.physicsforums.com/showpost.php?p=665680&postcount=1707

It says, "Where would Albert Einstein hang out if was alive?"

The back is different than the front. It gives the answer to the question.

I won't tell you the answer since you have to buy the shirt to find out.

I can't remember how much it cost. I bought it from some guy on a street corner that had no streetlight. Hopefully, he was able to buy one before it got dark.

Can we have a T-shirt design competition?

Hold off on that until I can get a version of Illustrator that works on my Intel Mac.

We have to design a T-shirt that's always wet.

That means including either a self-watering device or something that increases the temperature enough that the wearer sweats a lot.

Let's see, it's a PhysicsForums shirt that doesn't say PhysicsForums anywhere. It asks some silly question about where Einstein the famous Physicist would hang, but it never mentions PhysicsForums. That's kind of strange, but so be it. But where would he hang? I suppose he would hang where he could discuss Physics with other Physicists, but where would that be? I give up.

If the shirt did say PhysicsFora somewhere, half the people you meet would exclaim with shock, "I didn't know Einstein was a Psychic!"

So it doesn't say PhysicsFora. That narrows it down considerably.

Could always have PF wet T-shirt competition. Who looks best in a wet PF T-shirt? I doubt anyone will be able to rob me of the title

2.2 million eh? Is that like the extreme price gouging that happens on old, discontinued items in some MMORPGs?

You should have it such that users can get their name on their shirt, so when I'm walking down the street and a pretty blonde has a PF shirt on, I can say, "It's MIH!".

  • #15
That would be sick Cyrus. Like jersey's. PF-Side gang jersey's.

PF represent! Ha, haha.

I don't wear t-shirts. :frown: How about a canvas bag? I use those.

On an embarrassing note, my company is giving away free solar powered backpacks, they power your electronic devices. o_O

I don't wear the typical male T-shirt either...seriously, we should have a more feminine version available. Maybe just a simple V-neck, short sleve shirt? Much more attractive on the female form.

I would definitely buy one!

I wonder if I can get a bunch of these, they would be great for college students and people that go hiking or camping. Why we are giving them to CEO's of companies that only wear designer suits, I have no idea.

I think it would look swell as a black t-shirt with the green and white logo with a white boarder.

I definitely prefer black...but wha's more important is the cut. I really want a shirt that is tailored for women. I love simple cotton shirts, but so many are tailored for men!

I agree, I hate men's shirts on women because they are very baggy and destroys her figure. A womans Tee should be cut narrower so I can see some boobs and waist.

That fits well.

You could restrict sales to lactating women...

Oh, and I like the idea of more feminine version, for us ladies. Wearing men's shirts...just makes me feel larger than what I am.

Better provide nursing access then... Just 'cause that's the stage me and the new baby will probably be at when (or soon after) these get printed. Then BogG can also get one for his "wingman." I think she's due before I am though... so y'all better hurry up...

  • #27
If a girl wears a t-shirt, it has to have the ripples between the boobs, otherwise do not wear.

http://www.cafepress.com

Here you can make your own online store that sells t-shirts, coffee mugs, mouse pads, ect with your artwork on them. I remember wanting to start one of my own way back when. I am fairly certain that you can make any of your designs come in both mens and womens styles.

Edit: And since the shirts are made on a per order basis (I think) Greg could even make up a limited time PF Sisterhood design without having to order separate shirts to be printed up.

Unfortunately though unless plenty of shirts sell or Greg makes the price particularly high he won't be making much money off of them.

Not necessarily,

lower prices may translate into more sales- --> more street presence --> more members --> more subscriptions --> world domination

You don't have a lot of choice with cafepress. The basic cost of the shirt+printing is $20 you can add any markup you like on top of this but you can't go cheaper unless you want to a bulk order, but then you have to handle the distribution.

An alternative if you can think of some funny slogans, rather than just a PF logo is thinkgeek. They might be prepared to make a run of "funny slogan + PF logo" and are generaly cheaper and more widely known than cafepress.

  • #34
If you do make a t-shirt I think it should be chosen from a contest, with no limit on number of submissions. That will surely produce a more favorable design than whatever one individual person comes up with.

  • #35
I've ordered shirts from thinkgeek a couple times. Not only are they cheaper but their shirts are higher quality as well. But do they print their own shirts or do they buy them from a print shop?

Who wants to start the t-shirt contest?

I heart the thinkgeek t-shirt slogans.

I could see thinkgeek possibly having a relationship with PF. Of course I have no idea what the guys who run it are like so who knows.

I didn't realize shirts at CafePress were so expensive. :-/

Where's my t-shirt? I'm going to keep bring this thread up every year or so until I get one.

They rely on selling a few (probably <100) of each shirt printing so can be cheaper

Cafepress are about the same as the T-shirt printing place in your local mall they pretty much do one-off on-demand and so are expensive.
If you have a logo as an image file the shop in the mall will do you a shirt for about the same price, or you can get T-shirt transfer paper at Staples for 50c/sheet and try it yourself.

I'd like to see some ideas for designs, just for fun...anyone care to try their art skills?

  • #41
I live right around the corner from Tees+Plus, a really good T-shirt (etc) printer. They did a great job producing our robotics team shirt this year. Since I was able to go there in person, several issues could be taken care of immediately. 72 shirt came to $5.70 each.

Let me know If I can assist in this thread.
