Naming Polymer Structures: A Quick Guide

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on naming a polymer depicted in an attached image, identified as a substituted polyene. Participants debate the existence and complexity of such a polymer, with one suggesting it resembles a copolymer or a more complex substituted structure. The chemical structure proposed is a conjugated polyene represented as (–C(NH2)=C(NH2)-C(OH)=C(OH)–)n. There is uncertainty regarding the synthesis of this polymer, prompting the suggestion that this topic could be explored in a separate thread. The naming of the polymer is proposed as poly[(1E,3E)-3,4-diamino-1,3-butadiene-1,2-diol], while also considering potential nomenclatural challenges arising from substitution occurring after the formation of the polyene.

How would I name the polymer in the attached image?

that is some kind of substituted polyene :-) hydrogen atoms are substituted with other groups, but I'm not sure that this exists

Why wouldn't it exist?

if it will be copolymer, it will look like attached image, or if it is substituted polyene, it will something more complicated. Also looks like you want to make something like Kevlar but I cann't imagine how are you going to synthesize this polymer.

No, it's the latter; just a simple substituted polyene

Also, why would a substituted polyene be more complicated?
It's just (–C(NH2)=C(NH2)-C(OH)=C(OH)–)n (a conjugated polyene)

Ahh...that might be a good question for another thread...

But as far as this thread is concerned, would its name be something like poly[(1E,3E)-3,4-diamino-1,3-butadiene-1,2-diol]?

ok, what about this kind of structure (if substitution occures after forming polyene).

What about it? Would opportunities for substitution pose nomenclatural problems?
