AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around finding a suitable science-themed gift for a physicist friend, specifically a device that demonstrates photon pressure. Participants identify the item as a Crookes radiometer, which features a fan with one black surface and one mirrored surface that spins in sunlight due to photon pressure. A link to additional information about the radiometer is provided for further reference. Suggestions for purchasing the item are limited, particularly for locations outside North America. The conversation highlights the interest in educational science toys as gifts.

Hi all,

I need to get a friend a present and as a physicist I really wana get them the 'science toy' kinda thing ... does anybody know the name for the encased photonic pressure experiment in which a fan shape has one black surface and a mirrored surface. When it placed in the sunlight the fan spins due to the photon pressure.

Thanks !

Seems Crookes radiometer is the name you are looking for.
Try snooping around here . I don't have time to look through the catalogue now, but they used to sell them. I also don't know where you are, so can't help if you're not in North America.

comparing a flat solar panel of area 2π r² and a hemisphere of the same area, the hemispherical solar panel would only occupy the area π r² of while the flat panel would occupy an entire 2π r² of land. wouldn't the hemispherical version have the same area of panel exposed to the sun, occupy less land space and can therefore increase the number of panels one land can have fitted? this would increase the power output proportionally as well. when I searched it up I wasn't satisfied with...
