Schools Re-neging Grad School Acceptance

AI Thread Summary
When considering backing out of an accepted PhD admission to pursue another opportunity, it's advisable to first formally accept the new school's offer. Once that is secured, contacting the original school to inform them of the decision to withdraw is essential. While the original institution may not be pleased, notifying them promptly allows them to offer the position to another candidate. Clear communication is key in this process to ensure a smooth transition.

Hi all,

I didn't hear from a particular school until today about my PhD application. Unfortunately, I already accepted admission at another school--is there a way to back out of that if I want to go to this other school?

Advice much appreciated.

Yes, you can call them up and tell them you're not coming. They probably won't be happy about it, but if you tell them now, they can still offer the position to someone else. But make sure you accept the new school first, and make sure they know you're coming.

I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
