AI Thread Summary
Nils-Axel Mörner, a prominent Swedish geologist and former chairman of the INQUA International Commission on Sea Level Change, asserts that claims of rising sea levels are exaggerated and unfounded. He argues that sea levels have not increased in the past 50 years and predicts any potential rise this century will be minimal, not exceeding 10 cm with significant uncertainty. Mörner emphasizes that his conclusions are drawn from direct field observations rather than computer model predictions, which he believes are the basis for alarmist narratives about climate change and sea level rise. He also references the laws of physics regarding ice melting, suggesting that catastrophic scenarios proposed by climate activists are implausible.

But if there is one scientist who knows more about sea levels than anyone else in the world it is the Swedish geologist and physicist Nils-Axel Mörner, formerly chairman of the INQUA International Commission on Sea Level Change. And the uncompromising verdict of Dr Mörner, who for 35 years has been using every known scientific method to study sea levels all over the globe, is that all this talk about the sea rising is nothing but a colossal scare story.

Despite fluctuations down as well as up, "the sea is not rising," he says. "It hasn't risen in 50 years." If there is any rise this century it will "not be more than 10cm (four inches), with an uncertainty of plus or minus 10cm". And quite apart from examining the hard evidence, he says, the elementary laws of physics (latent heat needed to melt ice) tell us that the apocalypse conjured up by
Al Gore and Co could not possibly come about.

The reason why Dr Mörner, formerly a Stockholm professor, is so certain that these claims about sea level rise are 100 per cent wrong is that they are all based on computer model predictions, whereas his findings are based on "going into the field to observe what is actually happening in the real world".

The Earth is warming. If the ice melts in the Antarctic, there will be sea level rise.
What are your thoughts on this?

If it is true that sea levels have not risen in 50 years, I'll be inclined to side with this swedish fellow.

We have little shade but plenty of wind on my property. The upshot of this is that I have to be judicious in how/where I put up shade-creating barriers in various places around my property to maximise shade without unduly large windage. My property is an irregular polygon and not aligned with the cardinal axes, so it is not easy to tell where the shade will be at a given time. For example, I have put up an umbrella next to our pool, but it can only shade the southish-side of the pool, and...
Thread 'The Secrets of Prof. Verschure's Rosetta Stones'
(Edit: since the thread title was changed, this first sentence is too cryptic: the original title referred to a Tool song....) Besides being a favorite song by a favorite band, the thread title is a straightforward play on words. This summer, as a present to myself for being promoted, I purchased a collection of thin sections that I believe comprise the research materials of Prof. Rob Verschure, who at the time was faculty in the Geological Institute in Amsterdam. What changed this...
