AI Thread Summary
Transferring to UNC Chapel Hill is being considered by a student with a high school GPA of around 3.0-3.2 and a first-year college experience that started poorly. The student scored 1300 on the SAT without preparation and is contemplating retaking the exam to improve their chances of acceptance, especially given their low high school grades. There is concern about the appropriateness of retaking the SAT after starting college, as it may seem unusual. Additionally, the student expresses a newfound interest in astronomy/physics and is advised to contact the program directly to discuss their situation. Suggestions include exploring easier admission routes into different fields before transferring to physics. Overall, the discussion revolves around the potential benefits of retaking the SAT and strategies for transferring to UNC Chapel Hill.

Hi everyone,
I am thinking about trying to transfer to UNC Chapel Hill from my current school. My grades in high school were not that great but they weren't horrible; I think I had around a 3 or 3.2 gpa. I didn't take any honors courses though. I just finished my first year in college. I took the SAT once in high school and I did not prepare for it and made a 1300. I have learned so much this year, and if I study I know I can improve that score. My question is should I re-take the SAT to increase my chances of getting accepted and make up for my low grades in high school? However, my general idea of the SAT was that it was an indication of how well you would do in college so now that I am in college and may look a little weird taking the SAT, and perhaps it won't make a difference. Does anyone have any advice on whether they think a retake would be beneficial? and the first semester I didn't do well at all, but I had plans on dropping out. I figured out I wanted to do astronomy/physics so the second semester

I would suggest trying to contact the program directly and explaining your situation to them. Here some contact information I found on their site. Remember that you may be able to get into the university easier in another field and than transfer over to physics.

"call the department office at (919) 962-2078. To learn more about studying physics at UNC-CH, contact the Assistant Chair, Prof. Laurie McNeil, at mcneil@physics.unc.edu."

-Disregard the last part of my post, I didn't meant to put it/I can't figure out how to edit it out.

Thanks tbradshaw, should I basically say the same thing as above?

After a year of thought, I decided to adjust my ratio for applying the US/EU(+UK) schools. I mostly focused on the US schools before, but things are getting complex and I found out that Europe is also a good place to study. I found some institutes that have professors with similar interests. But gaining the information is much harder than US schools (like you have to contact professors in advance etc). For your information, I have B.S. in engineering (low GPA: 3.2/4.0) in Asia - one SCI...
I graduated with a BSc in Physics in 2020. Since there were limited opportunities in my country (mostly teaching), I decided to improve my programming skills and began working in IT, first as a software engineer and later as a quality assurance engineer, where I’ve now spent about 3 years. While this career path has provided financial stability, I’ve realized that my excitement and passion aren’t really there, unlike what I felt when studying or doing research in physics. Working in IT...
Hello, I’m an undergraduate student pursuing degrees in both computer science and physics. I was wondering if anyone here has graduated with these degrees and applied to a physics graduate program. I’m curious about how graduate programs evaluated your applications. In addition, if I’m interested in doing research in quantum fields related to materials or computational physics, what kinds of undergraduate research experiences would be most valuable?
