AI Thread Summary
The discussion explores the potential of neutrinos as a medium for extraterrestrial communication, suggesting that traditional radio signals may be inefficient for long-distance contact. A recent VLA search for narrow-band radio emissions from the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies yielded no significant results, prompting the question of whether SETI has overlooked more effective communication methods. Neutrinos, with their ability to penetrate various conditions without interference, could offer a viable alternative. However, detecting such signals would require prior knowledge of encoding methods, as specific neutrino frequencies might indicate intelligent origin. The conversation highlights the need for innovative approaches in SETI research beyond conventional radio surveys.

This paper; https://arxiv.org/abs/1702.03301, A VLA Search for Radio Signals from M31 and M33, discusses the results [null] of a VLA search for narrow band radio emissions from the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies. The focus was on narrow band signals because these are the only radio signals that would be powerful enough to have a significant signal to noise ratio, rendering them useful for long distance communications. This raises an obvious question. Since SETI has largely been focused on radio band surveys without success, could we be missing something obvious? Perhaps ET realized long ago that radio was too inefficient and energy intensive to be practical for long range communication, what are the other options? Perhaps neutrinos would be appealing. They have incredible range and laugh at conditions like EM interference that effectively wash out radio waves. Just because we have crappy neutrino detection capability does not mean ET suffers the same limitation.

Unsurprisingly, this is not an altogether original idea. A brief search turned up this paper which SETI enthusiasts [like me] might find interesting; https://arxiv.org/abs/0805.2429, Galactic Neutrino Communication.

How to encode information in neutrinos though?

Edit:
OK the link explains that, but still you would need to know the encoding first to detect that a signal is present.

The are neutrino frequencies that would stand out as unnatural and serve as a clue they are of intelligent origin. Of course ET may elect not to use such frequencies if drawing attention to the signal source was undesired. I doubt paranoia is exclusively anthropic.

Asteroid, Data - 1.2% risk of an impact on December 22, 2032. The estimated diameter is 55 m and an impact would likely release an energy of 8 megatons of TNT equivalent, although these numbers have a large uncertainty - it could also be 1 or 100 megatons. Currently the object has level 3 on the Torino scale, the second-highest ever (after Apophis) and only the third object to exceed level 1. Most likely it will miss, and if it hits then most likely it'll hit an ocean and be harmless, but...
