Shocker: PR Box is logically inconsistent

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the logical consistency of PR boxes in the context of quantum physics, specifically addressing claims made by Pierre Uzan regarding their existence and implications for existing theories. The scope includes theoretical implications and the interpretation of non-local correlations in quantum mechanics.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that Uzan's work refutes the positions of Popescu and Rohrlich, indicating a significant impact if correct.
  • Another participant argues that Uzan's paper reiterates that PR boxes cannot exist under the assumption that quantum mechanics accurately describes correlation experiments, framing this as a known aspect of the PR box concept.
  • A third participant expresses uncertainty, proposing that the paper claims PR boxes are mathematically inconsistent, which contradicts prior beliefs about their validity.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing interpretations of Uzan's claims, with no consensus on the implications for the existence or consistency of PR boxes. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the interpretations of the paper's conclusions.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the definitions of non-locality and the implications of mathematical consistency as discussed in the paper. The interpretations of Uzan's claims may depend on the context of quantum mechanics and the theoretical frameworks being employed.

If correct, Uzan refutes Popescu and Rohrlich.
To me this seems like a big deal.

Huh? This paper shows that PR boxes cannot exist if you assume that the quantum description of correlation experiments (in terms of Hilbert spaces, observables, etc.) is the correct one. This isn't news. The whole point of the PR box is that it is a hypothetical example of correlations that are more nonlocal than (and thus not allowed by) quantum physics but which still satisfy the no-signalling constraints.

I could be wrong, but I think it says that PR boxes are mathematically inconsistent, contrary to what was previously believed.
