AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the challenges faced by a student transitioning from a small teaching college to a major research university while pursuing an applied math major. The student is struggling in a required electricity and magnetism class, feeling unprepared compared to peers. They anticipate receiving a C or C+ and are contemplating whether to retake the class for a better grade, which would limit their ability to take higher-level math classes later. The possibility of withdrawing from the class without academic penalty is also considered, but the student confirms they cannot withdraw. The conversation highlights the difficulties of adjusting to a more rigorous academic environment and the strategic decisions involved in course selection and grade improvement.

I intend to eventually go to graduate school for some type of applied math...I'm leaning towards either computational or statistics.

I just recently transferred to a major research university from a small teaching college, and academically it was a bit of a shock for me. I took mechanics for majors at the smaller teaching college, but it did not prepare me for the electricity and magnetism class for majors at my current school.

I started off the semester very slowly, and have just begun to catch up with the rest of the class. I think I will probably receive a C or C+, and this class is required for my applied math major.

My university allows me to retake a class one additional time for a higher grade. If I retake the class though, that is one less higher level math class I will be able to take later.

So, should I retake it?

Can you still withdraw without academic penalty? Just another option to consider.

I cannot. If I were able to, I would.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
