Should I Take Quantum Optics This Fall?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the decision to take a Quantum Optics course alongside a full course load, which includes three physics classes and a required course. The suggestion to enroll in Quantum Optics was made to enhance understanding of undergraduate research, despite the individual not having taken a formal Quantum Mechanics course yet. Concerns were raised about the difficulty of managing such a heavy load, especially without prior exposure to Quantum Mechanics. Participants emphasized that jumping into Quantum Optics without foundational knowledge in QM could lead to a challenging experience. Ultimately, the consensus leans towards waiting to take the course until after completing necessary prerequisites for a more positive learning experience.

I had a discussion with a professor and it was suggested that I take Quantum Optics this coming fall. I already have a full course load with 3 physics classes (Electrodynamics, Modern Physics (general), and math for physicists) and one required course (comparative religions). It was suggested that it might make my undergrad research more understandable. I relayed the information that I have yet to take a "real" QM course, let alone Quantum Optics. "You should be alright." was the response. I don't know though, that seems like a big step. Does anyone have any experience or advice for me? Thanks.

Oh yeah, the 4 classes WITH undergrad research.

I've always followed professors in their advice and they have to be proven wrong yet. He knows the courseload and if he knows you I would follow his advice.

If you haven't taken QM before and currently taking Electrodynamics, I don't think it is a good idea at all to jump to a Quantum Optics course right now.

It will be a rough and bumpy ride in my opinion and more of a negative experience.

Also you said it yourself, it was suggested that it "MIGHT" make your undergrad research more understandable.

Thanks. That's my gut feeling as well. I want to take it but now isn't the time. Thanks for the push in the realistic direction.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
