Sizing Wind Turbine Generator - 8,000 Nm's - Help Needed!

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around sizing a wind turbine generator based on an available torque of 8,000 Nm. Participants are exploring the requirements for selecting an appropriate generator size and the specifications for turbine blades, particularly in relation to different power ratings (500 kW, 1 MW, and 1.5 MW).

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • AV8TUR seeks assistance in calculating the appropriate size of a wind turbine generator based on a torque of 8,000 Nm.
  • Some participants express uncertainty regarding the details provided, suggesting that more information is needed to proceed with sizing.
  • There is a question about whether the inquiry pertains to turbine blade size or generator/motor size.
  • AV8TUR clarifies the focus is on determining the generator size that can handle the specified torque and requests torque requirements for various generator power ratings.
  • One participant mentions that a 1.5 MW generator typically has a diameter of around 6 meters when rotating at the same speed as the turbine and references Enercon's website for additional information.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion reflects a lack of consensus, with participants expressing different levels of understanding and clarity regarding the original question and the information needed for sizing the generator.

Contextual Notes

Participants note the absence of specific details that would aid in the calculations, such as the rotational speed of the turbine and the relationship between torque and generator specifications.

I am attempting to size a wind turbine generator where the torque available is 8,000 Nm's. Can anyone save me doing the calculations? Regards AV8TUR.

Welcome to PF!

It isn't clear to me what you are trying to do. You haven't provided enough information to "size" anything and what you have provided doesn't seem relevant.

Are you needing to know which size turbine blade or which size generator/motor?

Hi MachX, I am looking for the generator size that 8,000Nm torque can handle. Also if possible, the start and continuous rated torque requirement for a 500Kw, 1Mw & 1.5Mw wind generator.

For a 1.5 MW generator rotating at the same speed as the turbine, it's around 6m diameter.
You have nice pictures at Enercon's website.
