News South Africa set to get a nuclear power plant funded by Russia

AI Thread Summary
South Africa is advancing its energy strategy by signing a cooperation deal with Russia to construct a nuclear power plant with a capacity of up to 9.6 GW by 2030. This facility is expected to significantly contribute to the country's electricity supply, potentially providing about one-third of its total energy needs. The project involves eight reactors, each with a capacity of 1.2 GW, and is estimated to cost around $10 billion, primarily benefiting Russia. However, most construction materials and labor will be sourced locally in South Africa, indicating a blend of international collaboration and domestic investment in the nuclear sector.

? so?

9.6 GWe? 6x1.6 GWe units? That's a big plant! According to wikipedia that is enough to supply about 1/3 of the entire country's electricity.

Good on South Africa! Nuclear power is the way to go.

The, erm, location does remind me a bit of Fukushima :nb).

Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
