AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around issues with auto-correct functionality affecting the spelling of "Cython," which is being automatically changed to "Python" in various browsers and devices. Users report different experiences based on their operating systems and browsers, with some encountering red underlines for "Cython" without auto-correct interference. A participant mentions that their physical keyboard on a tablet does not allow for disabling auto-correct, unlike on-screen keyboards. Suggestions for adjusting settings on Android devices are provided, but users clarify that these do not apply to their specific setups. Ultimately, the conversation highlights the inconsistencies of auto-correct features across different platforms and devices.

@Greg Bernhardt, does PF have some kind of forced auto-correct in post windows? I was trying to type C-y-t-h-o-n in a post just now and it kept getting corrected to "Python" (note that I couldn't type the word I wanted in this post either without it getting auto-corrected, I had to use the dashes), and I can't find anything else in my configuration that could be doing that.

Testing Cython. I just get a red underline, no autocorrect.

ADD -- I'm on a Windows 10 laptop with Firefox browser.

Same here, Chrome on Linux. The last time I had weird autocorrect behavior here it was an artifact of some obscure browser settings.

Cython works for me. Firefox under Windows 11. Same red underscore as Mike.

Cython - no underline

But I'm robust anyway. Have you ever tried to type subrjective? There are some more, but I have forgotten which.

Cython from Pixel 6 Android phone.

Ok, I tried in Firefox on a different device and no auto-correct, so it is something to do with the specific device/browser I was using. Nothing to see here, move along. o:)

Cython. Works for me.

Um. Is @PeterDonis on a mobile device? They will autocorrect, yes, but your interface should have the ability to not choose the suggested word. Just tap on the one you want.

A tablet, but not using the on-screen keyboard. What happens is not that I get a choice between words, the way I would if I were typing using the on-screen keyboard on my smartphone. I just type "Cython" and it changes to "Python" without asking anything. I've dug around in various places in the settings but haven't been able to turn the behavior off.

Most autocorrect implementations only run when you finish a word (e.g. by typing a space), if you go back and fix a word (only changing P to C) they should accept that (and give you an option to add it to the dictionary). If that doesn't work, it's a shitty feature that should be disabled.

"To disable autocorrect on an Android tablet, navigate to Settings > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard and find the option for "Auto-correction" or "Text correction." Toggle it off to disable autocorrect. The specific steps might vary slightly depending on your Android version and keyboard app. "

Yes, if I were using the on-screen keyboard on the tablet, this would work. But I'm not. I'm using a physical keyboard that plugs into the tablet--and for the physical keyboard, there is no such setting--at least, I haven't found one.

Yes, they should, but the one running on my device apparently doesn't.

Ah. I was wondering how you were typing, without a virtual kb
