Statistical Mechanics centers in Europe

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on pursuing a PhD in theoretical statistical mechanics in Europe. A user seeks guidance on institutes with strong programs in this field, particularly in the UK. Recommendations include the University of Edinburgh, known for its applied research and simulations in complex systems, and Cambridge, which has a focus on more theoretical aspects of statistical mechanics. There is also an inquiry about the status of statistical mechanics programs in continental Europe, indicating a broader interest in finding suitable academic environments across various European institutions.

Hi all,

I am thinking of doing a PhD in theoretical statistical mechanics and would like to do it in Europe. I am having trouble finding institutes with a focus on SM or Physics/Mathematics departments strong in the field. Some guidance would be really appreciated.

Thanks, and best regards.

Francesc.

Personally, I'd love info on stat mech programs in the UK. There's a chance that we're moving there next year.

Hi Geezer,

As far as I can tell, there's a strong cluster at the University of Edimburgh, in the physics department doing fairly applied stuff and simulations of complex systems. I think there's quite a bit going on the more 'pure' side in Cambridge. Hope this helps. Otherwise, anybody knows about the Stat Mech scene in continental europe? Cheers?

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
