AI Thread Summary
Cesium and thallium have significant applications in various fields, particularly in nuclear medicine. Radioisotopes of cesium, such as Cs-137, are utilized in radiotherapy to target and kill cancer cells. Thallium is also important in medical diagnostics and is used in thallium bromide-iodide crystals for infrared optical materials. Additionally, thallium combined with sulfur, selenium, and arsenic is employed to create low melting glasses that remain durable and insoluble in water at room temperature. Thallium oxide is known for producing high refractive index glasses. However, thallium's toxicity raises concerns, as it has been associated with criminal activities. The discussion also touches on the availability of cesium and thallium in chemist stores, with skepticism regarding the necessity or legality of purchasing these elements.

It goes like this, very simple:

How and where can cesium and thallium be used?

Here are two:

Radioisotopes of both elements are used in nuclear medicine for the diagnosis of various medical conditions.

Cs-137 is also used as a source for radiotherapy machines, to kill cancer cells.

Here is another for thallium..

Thallium bromide-iodide crystals have been used as infrared optical materials.

Thallium along with sulfur or selenium and arsenic is used to produce low melting glasses witch become fluid between 125 and 150C. These glasses have properties at room temperatures similar to ordinary glasses and are said to be durable and insoluble in water.

Thallium oxide has been used to produce glasses with a high index of refraction

But thallium is poisonous as well isn't it? I once saw a crime programme on Discovery Channel where a murderer had used thallium to kill a man.

Can I buy cesium or thallium at a chemist's store?

Why would you want to do that?

Cannot answer that.

I want to test a humidity sensor with one or more saturated salt solutions. The table salt that I have on hand contains one of two anticaking agents, calcium silicate or sodium aluminosilicate. Will the presence of either of these additives (or iodine for that matter) significantly affect the equilibrium humidity? I searched and all the how-to-do-it guides did not address this question. One research paper I found reported that at 1.5% w/w calcium silicate increased the deliquescent point by...
I'm trying to find a cheap DIY method to etch holes of various shapes through 0.3mm Aluminium sheet using 5-10% Sodium Hydroxide. The idea is to apply a resist to the Aluminium then selectively ablate it off using a diode laser cutter and then dissolve away the Aluminium using Sodium Hydroxide. By cheap I mean resists costing say £20 in small quantities. The Internet has suggested various resists to try including... Enamel paint (only survived seconds in the NaOH!) Acrylic paint (only...
