AI Thread Summary
A third-year MPhys student seeks guidance on their project, expressing frustration for not joining the forum earlier. They inquire about the structure of a final report for a theoretical project and the expectations regarding research and derivations. The student notes that their project carries fewer credits compared to BSc final year projects and asks for advice on presenting researched information. Another member shares their experience with a shorter project, mentioning minimal research and suggesting the student clarify their project title and background material for more tailored advice.

Hey guys.

I am new to this forum, and being a 3rd year student in an MPhys course I am slightly irate that I hadn't registered this forum before, or any other physics forums for that matter. Hence the username.

That said, I need all the advice I can get regarding a project I am doing for my 3rd year physics course.

Ok, let me explain: I am doing the MPhys course, so its not my final year, therefore my project is only worth half the credits (20 credits rather than 40) than people who are on the BSc course (because its their final year project).

The question is: Are there any UK forum members who could tell me the structure of the final report and also give me advice. For a theoretical project, do they expect a lot of research, derivations etc. and how do I present researched information?
I know these are such newbie questions but I haven't done a theoretical project before.

Would be nice if I could get a few contacts on MSN to help me out with these things.

Thank you for reading.

The project I did in my third year was pretty short: probably only about 30 pages. There wasn't too much research in there, just rehashing of a couple of papers I'd read, and a calculation or two filling in the gaps that papers notoriously leave. I'm guessing that this isn't your final year project, but that you have to do another project next year, right?

I'm not sure what other advice you're after. Do you have a project title, and suggested background material?

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
