Tracking IP Addresses: How to Determine the Location of an AOL User?

AI Thread Summary
When using AOL, users can be traced to their geographical location through their IP addresses, which can reveal the state they are connecting from. If a proxy is not used, anyone can determine a user's location by performing a traceroute on the IP address. However, tracing may only provide information about the server rather than the specific user. Discussions also touch on the implications of Source DNS, which can provide insights into network behavior, and the possibility of identifying the modem used by access users. The conversation includes curiosity about AOL's continued operation and the motivations behind wanting to trace users, with some questioning the relevance of such inquiries.

When you use AOL, can people check out which state are you coming from ?
Are those people's Ip addresses started with 176 or 172 right ? sorry I don't remember it now.
Thanks

If your not using a proxy then anyone on the net can find where you are. Just do a traceroute on the ip.

1>Are there any exceptions ?
Even when you can trace out the IP addresses, sometimes I guess you can only figure out the server he/she is using...
2>Another question i'd like to make, what you can conclude about a certain Source DNS you know ? I mean what can you do with it ?
3>How can you read the modem name that access users are using ?

Thanks

Why do you want to know?

AOL is still in business? How?

What 'jumped' in ? Why ?

If you think this is a question for development though it is clumpsy or so, why don't you give me the answers ?
How do you check it ?
What tools/software do you use to do that ?
I always heard someone say because of development, of choosing the most fitness, of taking the best one and ignoring any other things that are preventing the going-up processes, so can that someone give me some information ?
Thanks
