AI Thread Summary
The conversation between Richard Dawkins and Neil deGrasse Tyson at the Hayden Planetarium sparked a debate about Dawkins' influence and intellectual merit. Some participants questioned why Dawkins is viewed as a leading figure, suggesting that his arguments often seem repetitive and lack depth. Critics compared his reasoning to sensationalist media, arguing that his approach to discussing religion is overly simplistic and flawed. Despite acknowledging some of his influential ideas, there is skepticism about the quality of his logic and the reasons behind his academic success at Cambridge.

I will watch when I have that much spare time. Why do so many people regard Dawkins as a guru? I don't think he is particularly brilliant, although his accent makes him sound as such. Kind of just repeats the same talking points in his speeches.

Thanks for sharing, DennisN!

Beats me. He has had some good and influential ideas. But much of his stuff is hacked together for the purpose of declaring religion an mental pathology. It isn't any better than Fox News. How a purveyor of such shoddy logic got to be department head at Cambridge is beyond me.

I doubt his ideas on religion had anything to do with getting his post at Cambridge.
