AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around frustrations with homework requirements in a Calculus I class, specifically the expectation to write out entire word problems verbatim. This practice consumes a significant portion of the homework pages, with students feeling it detracts from the actual math work. Some participants express a desire for alternative methods, such as summarizing problems or printing them out, to reduce the redundancy of writing lengthy text. Others share their experiences with different homework loads in various courses, noting that the amount of written work can vary significantly based on individual writing styles and course expectations. Overall, the conversation highlights a common annoyance among students regarding the balance between thoroughness and efficiency in homework assignments.

I have to vent about this because it's starting to really bug me. So for my Calc I class we usually have about 5 pages worth of homework a week. My professor has us write all the entire problem verbatim on the paper we turn in. The problems are usually word problems and involve a large amount of text to even explain what's going on. So, on any page of completed homework I have about 30-40% of the problem just written out and the rest is actual Math work. I feel like I've reverted back to 3rd grade. I feel like just printing out the problem (because we have an online resource) and then just gluing it to the page.

Does anyone else have this sort of annoyance?

Heh, my Calculus homeworks usually amount to just under 10 pages, and even then the TA who grades it remarked on one of them to write a bit bigger.

I usually do this anyways; it cements things in my brain.

"Calc I", the directions about the homework assignments are done for a reason. Most probably this is to force students to be organized. Some other variations on being organized on homework are possible but your professor chose this detail of writing the original exercise fully in words. Try asking him(or her) if some alternate manner of displaying the item from the book would also be acceptable, such as listing given information and just display the actual question asked. Maybe some text information from the book item can be condensed and still precisely understood.

Also, when you say "entire problem verbatim", just how many words average is each problem?

In my calc I class we had to write out every single rule or theorem we used to solve the problem. Which in theory sounds great since it cements them in your head, however in reality it got tiresome writing out "constant rule, constant multiple, sum rule, difference rule, power rule" every single time there was a simple polynomial.

This was especially tiresome when we were doing limits when the rules where more less obvious and abundant.

Now aside from copy and pasting the actual problem, I don't see any wrong with what you mentioned. Although I agree, annoying.

O wow, in my calc 1 class we didn't have any homework and exam were multiple choice lol, well we did have labs, i guess u can say that was homework all we did was problems but they were multiple choice also.

5 pages a week? That's nothing. Honestly, that's the minimum work load for any upper level physics course.

What lol I am taking 3 junior level physics and on average the homework in each class takes up about 2-3 pages

Lol how many pages your homework takes up depends on how you write it. I like to write really big and space things out a lot. There was someone in my stat mech class that would consistently fit the homework on a single page. The same homework would take me at least 10 pages.

o lol that makes sense, was thinking maybe my professors just make the course easier or something, well i still spend like hours doing like 5 problems
